Day 4 Winnipeg in Winter
The winter winds were blowing today, the wind chill today was -26 at the corner of Portage and Main, know as the cross roads of the nation and the coldest corner of the country.
That pretty well wraps up today's geography lesson.
Not a whole lot goes on in down town Winnipeg on a wintry Monday, the museum I wanted too see was closed. I ventured out to the exchange district an artsy type district with galleries and boutiques type shop. I spent about 5 minutes looking around and headed back to the business district.
Winnipegers don't like the cold either so most of the downtown area is connected by walkways that are above or below ground you can walk around a huge area downtown and not step outside.
The main reason for my stop over in Winnipeg is to watch a Jets game at the Bell MTS place a new rink in the heart of downtown.
It a scaled down version of Rogers place in Edmonton not as glitzy and shinny but a great rink to watch hockey in. There are lots of restaurants and bars all close by and all connected with the walkway system. My hotel is about 6 blocks from the rink it took all but a few steps outside to my hotel as it was all connected by the walkway system.
I spoke with the people where I was sitting and they were all regular season ticket holders and decked out in the latest Jets gear. They say they have the loudest rink in the NHL but I'm not sure about that.
One thing they have in common in the NHL is over priced concession items with prices not much different than Oiler games. The 50/50 is much smaller only about $50,000 as compared to Edmonton 's 50/50 which is in the $75-$100 K per game. The atmosphere was good and the fans know their hockey and are no different than in Edmonton, by I think the crowd has an older demographic.
The \Jets won and everyone went home happy.
Tomorrow is 6.5 hours west to Moose Jaw to watch the Rockets take on the Warriors.
